What does a breakup coach do?

By Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach & author of How to Get Your Ex Back · Updated 2026-09-01

Short answer: A breakup coach builds you a specific no-contact plan, reads every message your ex sends before you reply, checks in daily, and tells you the truth at 11pm when you're about to break the plan. It's strategy plus accountability, not therapy and not a secret technique. A good coach also tells you when not to try.

People ask this expecting either a magic technique or a therapist with a different name. It’s neither. I’m Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach and author of How to Get Your Ex Back, and here’s what the job actually looks like, stripped of the mystery.

What does a real week of coaching look like?

Day one is an assessment, not a pep talk: what actually broke the relationship, both people’s attachment styles as best we can tell, and whether trying to reconcile is even the right move for this specific situation. Some cases, the honest answer is no, and I say so before any plan gets built.

From there, the work runs in a specific order.

  1. The no-contact plan. Not a generic “30 days of silence” rule. The length and shape of it depends on how the relationship ended and your ex’s attachment style, avoidant exes and anxious exes need different handling.
  2. Daily check-ins. The rules aren’t the hard part. Staying steady at 11pm on day 12, phone in hand, is. That’s where a coach earns the fee: being the person who tells you not to send it, and means it.
  3. Reading every message before you reply. Once contact resumes, what your ex actually said, and what it means, gets reviewed before you respond, not after you’ve already sent something you’ll regret.
  4. The first text. Timing and exact wording of the re-entry message, tuned to what’s happened since the breakup, not a template. Full mechanics are in the re-entry guide.
  5. The dating phase. If your ex responds well, coaching shifts to pacing: how fast to move, when to bring up the relationship directly, how to avoid sliding back into the exact pattern that broke things the first time.

What is a relationship coach?

A relationship coach works on the patterns and skills that shape how someone connects with a partner: communication, conflict, attachment habits. It’s a broad category. A breakup coach is a specialty inside it, focused narrowly on the window right after a relationship ends, whether the goal is getting back together or moving on with a clear head.

What’s the difference between a breakup coach, a relationship coach, and a dating coach?

Type of coach What they focus on
Dating coach Meeting and attracting new people
Relationship coach Patterns and skills inside an existing or future relationship
Breakup coach The specific period after a split: no-contact, re-entry, deciding whether to try

What a breakup coach is not

Not a therapist. A coach doesn’t treat depression, anxiety disorders, or trauma, and a good one refers you out when that’s what’s actually going on. Not a hypnotist, and not the owner of some secret psychological trick your ex can’t resist. Every technique I use is published on this site for free; coaching is having someone apply it to your exact situation and hold you accountable, not access to information nobody else has.

Is coaching worth it, or can I just do this myself?

Plenty of people run the process alone using the free guides on this site, and some do it well. Coaching is for the people who want judgment on their specific case in real time, someone who’s seen hundreds of these situations telling them the truth when their own judgment is compromised by missing the person. What coaching with me looks like has the full breakdown if you’re weighing that decision.
