# How does no contact after a breakup work, week by week?

**Short answer:** No contact after a breakup means you stop initiating messages for three to six months, counted from your last contact. The first two weeks are the hardest, the middle weeks feel flat, and the last stretch is when you start to feel steady. You end it by choice, not because the date came up.

No contact after a breakup is easy to describe and hard to live through. For three to six months you don't start any conversation with your ex. This page covers what it feels like week by week, because knowing what's normal keeps you from quitting at the worst moment.

## What happens in each stage?

| Stage | What it feels like | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 14 | Raw. Constant urge to check and text. | Sleep, eat, tell a friend. Send nothing. |
| Weeks 3 to 6 | Flat, restless, sometimes a false calm. | Build a routine. Gym, work, friends. |
| Weeks 6 to 10 | Waves of doubt or anger. | Write it down, don't send it. |
| Months 3 to 6 | Steadier. Fewer thoughts about them. | Decide whether you still want them. |

## What are the rules?

1. You don't call, text, email, or message through friends.
2. You mute their social media, and you don't check it.
3. You don't "accidentally" show up where they will be.
4. If they reach out, you reply kindly and briefly.
5. You don't announce no contact to them. It isn't a threat.

## Why is the first month so hard?

Your brain treats the loss like a threat, and the urge to text is that alarm going off. The fix is not willpower. It's a plan for the exact hours when it hits, usually late at night. Put the phone in another room. Have one person you can call. Move your body before you decide anything.

## How do I know when it's over?

Three signs. You can think of them without your stomach dropping. You could send a message that asks for nothing. And you'd be okay with any answer, including none. If you can't say yes to all three, give it more time. The calendar sets the minimum. How you feel decides the rest.

## What this looks like in practice

A composite from two clients. One man broke no contact on day nine with a two-page message. His ex went quiet and the clock restarted. He came back to it with a rule: when he wanted to text, he called his brother first. The second client, a woman, had no urge until week five, when a song came on in a store and she nearly lost it. She wrote the message in her notes app, read it the next morning, and deleted it. Both made it past month three.

## What should I not do?

Don't treat the silence as a game that only works if she or he panics. Don't date someone new just to prove you're fine. And if you ever feel unsafe or hopeless, call or text 988. That comes before everything else here.
