**Short answer:** No contact after a breakup means a full stop on reaching out: no texts, no calls, no liking their posts, for three to six months depending on attachment style and how it ended. It works because it gives both of you real distance, so feelings can settle instead of being reacted to.

No contact after a breakup means exactly what it sounds like: you stop reaching out, completely, for a real stretch of time. No texts, no calls, no "just checking in," no liking their photos or watching every story the second it posts. I'm Benny Lichtenwalner, breakup coach and author of *How to Get Your Ex Back*. It's the single move I recommend most, and also the most misunderstood.

## Why does going quiet actually help?

Right after a breakup, both people are still running on the daily rhythm of the relationship: the texts, the check-ins, the small habits of attention. Contact during that window doesn't let either of you feel the actual shape of the loss. It just keeps the old rhythm limping along at a lower volume.

Silence removes that. Whatever feelings were real underneath the daily noise, missing someone, relief, resentment, doubt, have room to surface honestly instead of getting managed through a text thread. That's true whether the goal is reconciliation or moving on. Distance is what lets feelings settle instead of loop.

## How long should no contact last?

| Situation | Typical window | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short relationship, clean breakup | 3 months (the floor) | Less daily entanglement to unwind |
| Longer relationship, or you've already broken no-contact once | 4–6 months | More rhythm to dismantle, more trust to rebuild before re-entry lands |
| Ex has an avoidant attachment style | Toward the 6-month end | Their feelings tend to stay suppressed until closer to the third month, and take longer to fully surface after that |
| Messy or painful ending | 6 months, sometimes longer | Both people need more room before any reach-out reads as anything but reopening it |

The clock starts at your last slip, not the day of the breakup. One accidental like resets it, which is exactly why removing temptation (muting, not just willpower) matters more than most people expect.

## What actually counts as no contact?

No contact is more specific than "don't text them." It includes:

1. No calls, texts, or messages of any kind, on any platform.
2. No liking, commenting, or viewing stories in a way that leaves a trace.
3. No "innocent" check-ins through mutual friends.
4. No showing up somewhere you know they'll be, on purpose.

It does not include ignoring them if they reach out to you. Replying warmly and briefly to something they initiate doesn't break the window. Initiating does.

## What do I actually do during the silence?

The silence is only half the tool. What fills it is the other half, and it's the part most people skip.

- Rebuild your sleep, food, and movement. The basics, not decoration.
- Spend real time with people who aren't your ex.
- Do the honest accounting: what actually broke the relationship, and what would genuinely need to change.
- Stay off their profile. Checking their activity is a quieter version of the same habit no-contact is meant to interrupt.

No-contact spent watching a countdown and refreshing their last-active status doesn't do the work the silence is supposed to create. The version that works is the one you fill with an actual life.

## What breaks no contact, and what to do if it happens

A slip doesn't ruin the process. It resets it. If you send a message, don't compound it by apologizing for the message itself, that's a second message. Go quiet again starting today, and don't treat the reset as proof the whole approach failed. Most people break it at least once before they hold it clean.

## What comes after no contact?

Once the window's done, the next step is a single short, low-pressure message, not a conversation about the relationship. [How to get an ex back](/answers/how-to-get-an-ex-back/) covers the full process from there, and the [no-contact rule guide](/guides/no-contact-rule/) has the complete protocol, exit conditions, and what to do if your ex reaches out first.
